Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for GenSPEED® Brand Category Cables... Solutions that Support Sustainability

gen cable leedGenSPEED® Brand Cables are now LEED® credit eligible!

As a global leader in the wire and cable industry, General Cable recognizes its role and responsibility in promoting sustainability and is committed to producing and marketing products in an environmentally sound and responsible manner. Furthering this commitment, General Cable now offers Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for it's GenSPEED® Brand line of copper data communications cables. The full line of Category 5e, 6 and 6A cables can now be used to help a building project obtain LEED® v4 status, an important initiative from the U.S. Green Building Council. Thank you General Cable for your commitment to sustainability!

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified report that describes the impact of the products we produce to the environment. An EPD is a cradle‑to‑grave assessment that looks at the energy consumed during the entire production process from raw material acquisition all the way through end of life disposal. This information can be used to not only produce products more efficiently, but to also reduce the impact to the environment in the greatest way possible in the long run.

What is LEED®?

generalcableLEED.pngLEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environment Design™, is a program created and administered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The program is designed to guide energy efficient building practices. According to the USGBC, nine out of 10 LEED certified buildings have demonstrated at least a 10 percent improvement in energy efficiency. For more information on LEED or the U.S. Green Building Council, you can visit www.usgbc.org/leed.

How can an EPD contribute to LEED status?

LEED points can be earned by products with Environmental Product Declarations. A project that uses at least 20 different permanently installed products from at least five different manufacturers will qualify for one point in the Materials and Resources section of LEED v4.

Which General Cable products can be used for LEED?

General Cable’s full line of GenSPEED® Brand category 5e, 6 and 6A cables, both plenum and riser versions, have been certified with an Environmental Product Declaration and can therefore be used to help contribute toward LEED v4 status. Congrats and thank you to General Cable for your commitment to the environment!
