Four Easy Steps to Clean and Sanitize a Fusion Splicer Safely

by Bobby Salerno on March 23, 2021

Not only is our personal hygiene important right now during this pandemic, we also need to ensure that high-touch items such as fusion splicers are sanitized correctly and often. Using the wrong materials can easily damage one of your largest investments. To help you avoid problems, here are four easy tips to safely clean a Sumitomo Electric fusion splicer:

1. Wash your hands with soap & water for at least 20 seconds or more (the equivalent of singing the “happy birthday" song twice)

2. Clean and sanitize Sumitomo Electric splicers and accessories (with the exception of the power cords) by a cloth with >70% alcohol (ethanol) on all surfaces (especially the buttons, clamps, holders, heaters, window hood, etc.)

3. Clean and sanitize the power cord jacket using soap (non-abrasive, non-solvent, non-alcohol-based), water, and a cleaning cloth.

4. Remember: Don't use canned air to blow inside the units. Fluoride gas will damage the microscope!
