General Cable Europe Design Success

by Julie Clark on August 7, 2015

General Cable recently achieved success in Europe upon providing the new submarine cable connecting the mainland to Belle-Île, the largest of the Îles du Ponant, located 15 km offshore from Quiberon.

This cable supplies not only electricity to the island's 5,400 inhabitants, but also high speed broadband carried on a 48 strand fiber optic cable.

This major project, carried out by ERDF, is a first in France. The 15 km submarine cable connecting Quiberon to Belle-Île has been designed and constructed in one piece, with no joints.

This industrial achievement was made possible through the use of the insulation and sheathing production lines at the Silec Cable plant at Montereau. These are used for high voltage and extra high voltage cables and offer the possibility of manufacturing unipolar jointless cables 15 km long. This technical challenge enables General Cable to supply a cable of the highest reliability, thus extending its service life.

Manufacturing this cable was a real team effort involving the skills of two General Cable Europe sites. The conductors were manufactured at Montereau in France before being transported by river to the Nordenham industrial site to the north of Bremen in Germany, which took responsibility for assembling the unipolar cables and applying their protective armouring.

The cable has two layers of metal armour, designed to provide a service life of at least forty years.

This hybrid cable, custom-designed to work within specific technical and environmental constraints, is a real technological feat. Producing a jointless 15 km submarine cable required exceptional efforts from the General Cable teams in France and Germany to ensure that this ambitious project was a success. Congrats to the teams in France and Germany making this a successful endeavor.

General Cable has shown itself well able to match this ambitious challenge, thus establishing it as a benchmark in the submarine cable market. Partner with Accu-Tech and General Cable to achieve success in your next big projects. Contact us today to learn more.
