Eleven years ago, the General Cable plant was on the brink of closure, today we're celebrating the same plant winning the 2014 IndustryWeek Best Plants competition. Every year, IndustryWeek (IW) honors manufactures and shares the stores of the great companies and teams that deliver nothing short of excellence to customers. Each company honored by IW faces unique challenges that are met with great leadership and innovative solutions. This year, the Silver Anniversary (25th consecutive year) of IW Best Plants winners represented the best yet and we're incredibly excited to see General Cable earn such a prestigious award.
The General Cable plant faced a difficult economy after the dot-com burst and in 2004 was facing a cost competitiveness feasibility study to see if it made sense to continue to operation. The future of the plant was far from certain. After critical changes were made, a downsizing and a focus on a different industry (mining), General Cable re-emerged with a renewed and re-energized workforce with a new focus and collaboration between employees that deeply benefited the company. In the long-term, these benefits resulted in the addition of three new product lines for renewable energy, oil and gas, and commercial building markers, that have only added to General Cable's continuing success.
In 2010 the plant created a central safety committee that was dedicated to the safety of employees. Today, through the efforts of every employee at every level, the dedication to a safety is ingrained in the company culture and has even spread outside the plant. General Cable gave employees smoke detectors and weather radios to ensure that the safety the plant is committed to literally hits home.
After Lee Sneed became plant manager in 2013, he made set a goal to transform the factory from "good to great." With the 2014 IndustryWeek Best Plants award under his belt, there's no doubt that Sneed is well on his way to accomplishing that goal.
