TE Connectivity: The Core VSM Solution

by Julie Clark on September 27, 2013

The TE Connectivity Core Vertical Switch Management (core VSM) system is a cable management solution supporting Cisco's NEXUS 7010 Core Switch, which commands a high share of the global market. The core VSM solution offers an innovative cable management approach for high-density core switches with vertical blades while minimizing space issues and maximizing savings.

TE Core VSM

The core VSM platform routes cables directly from switch ports to patch panels above the switch. This direct connection provides space, access, and maintenance benefits to high-density core switches with vertical blade configurations.

The new core VSM platform simplifies the build process by managing all patch cables, both fiber and copper, vertically. The innovative design showcases a cable management guide that fits above the switch, and copper or fiber modules that provide connections for blades of either media. The complete core VSM platform can be installed within an 800mm wide cabinet, saving valuable white space in the data center while reducing cable clutter and simplifying installation and MACs. Paired with TE Quick-Fit cassettes, the core VSM supports a seamless migration from 10 to 40 and 100 Gbs applications.

“The core VSM solution removes the need for cable management at the side of the frame, bringing a number of benefits to the data center. Space savings, cost reductions, and enhanced efficiency are realized by ensuring clear representation of the switch ports and ease of access,” says Ken Hall, national account manager within TE’s Enterprise Networks business. “These efficiencies help reduce Day 2 activities. Plus, inventory is reduced by only having to stock a single patch cord length. It all adds up to a powerful return on investment.”

Main features and benefits of the core VSM solution include:

  • Cabling routes directly from switch to ports to patch panels above the switch
  • Logical representation of the switch ports and ease of access
  • Single patch cord lengths
  • Simplified blade changeover
  • Supports both copper and fiber cabling and facilitates the migration from one to the other
  • Compatibility with the Universal Connectivity Platform– TE’s advanced modular cabling solution
