General Cable Copper Solutions Worldwide

by Julie Clark on July 25, 2014

General Cable is one of the leading companies in the cable manufacturing industry worldwide. General Cable was chosen by Siemens to be the supplier of needed cable for the extension of REN’s Substation in Vermoim (northern Portugal), one of the oldest and most critical points of the entire power distribution system of the national grid. In addition to the bare Copper cables for ground network, insulated Low Voltage and Medium Voltage cables, General Cable also supplied the High Voltage Copper cable 60 kV with cross section 1600 mm2.

The 60 kV cable is one of the largest cables with Copper conductor installed in Portugal. The cable was supplied in reels of 2.800mm diameter with a total weight of around 8.800 kg. This High Voltage cable supplied by General Cable was installed to connect both outdoor park equipment of 400kV and 60kV, through the new 400/60 kV transformers installed in the substation.

This project began in 2011 and is projected to be completed in October 2016. With this project, the REN substation aims to strengthen the transport capacity, quality and security of supply consumption in the region.

The proper function of this substation is crucial to the safe and reliable operation of the entire national network. Therefore, when REN decided to extend this substation, introducing the 400 kV level with GIS technology (Gas-insulated Switchgear), remodeling the current posts 220kV and 60kV, as well the protection systems, command and control (SPCC’s), they chosen Siemens, longtime partner and major customer of General Cable, which provided the necessary cables to this expansion.
