Nowadays, modern humans spend about 90% of their lives indoors. Because of this, architects and designers are creating environments that are smarter, more adaptive and more unified than before. And these new Sustainable Intelligent Buildings require cabling that is just as efficient and versatile. Superior Essex has worked with customers to develop thousands of cabling solutions designed to optimize, customize and unify their enterprise spaces – all from what’s behind their walls.
These innovative solutions include PowerWise®, the company’s industry-leading Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cable. By transmitting power and data over a single Ethernet cable, PoE acts as a building’s central nervous system, connecting its smart devices for access controls, lighting, occupancy sensing, networking and more to create an efficient, dynamic, easy-to-manage environment. PowerWise® cables also are highly energy-efficient, saving building owners money by reducing power loss and overall energy consumption. And because power and data are transmitted over a single cable, installation is also faster and less costly.
But is it too good to be true? Is it a proven solution?
PowerWise® in the Real World
The design and renovation teams behind two prominent and recently completed Sustainable Intelligent Buildings eagerly chose Superior Essex PowerWise® products to connect their built environments.
By masterfully combining Art Deco architectural beauty with future-forward technologies and sustainable cable, Sinclair Holdings, LLC and partners have renovated and revitalized a 1930s-era historic landmark in Fort Worth, Texas, into an unprecedented Sustainable Intelligent Building – one that provides immense energy efficiency, savings on both construction time and cost and an unrivaled hospitality experience – all run on DC power and Superior Essex Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cable. With over 6,500 connected devices; 286,000 feet of Superior Essex cabling products; and 35% savings on energy costs, The Sinclair Hotel is now one of the most advanced, energy-efficient, DC-powered structures in the world.
Utilizing 22 AWG copper conductors, PowerWise® 1G 4PPoE cable delivers 60 Watts of power to PoE enabled devices with 97% power efficiency and 100 Watts of power at 88% power efficiency, while also supporting 1 Gigabit data transmission. In spaces with hundreds of PoE devices, this greatly improved power efficiency can yield an energy savings of thousands of kilowatt hours per year, which translates to thousands of dollars in saved utility costs. Additionally, PowerWise® 1G cable maintains the lowest temperature rise in large cable bundles, ensuring reliable power and data transmission in high-density installations and further improving system energy efficiency.
The Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) supports the advancement of the information and communications technology (ICT) community, and it remains as a trusted source of international certification for cable installers and designers who specialize in complex voice and data cable layouts. When BICSI wanted to update the technology inside its 35,000-square-foot world headquarters in Tampa, Florida, to keep pace with industry changes, the association turned to Superior Essex.
With support and recommendations from the Superior Essex Communications team, BICSI selected PowerWise® 1G cabling for PoE lighting and other applications, CAT 6A for networking and Wi-Fi, CAT 6A Shielded for HDBaseT needs, and premises fiber for networking capabilities. As a result of the cabling changes, BICSI has been able to conserve energy and collect vital building analytics, and then put that data to use to help maintain a healthy building environment.
By being energy-efficient, cost-effective and cutting-edge, PowerWise® and other PoE products from Superior Essex help create Sustainable Intelligent Buildings that benefit everyone – owners, designers, builders and occupants – and the environment we all share.
